Can We Build Smarter and More Sustainable Cities?
By ChatVoss & RyanCt | VosServices
What makes a city truly smart and sustainable?
It is not only about sensors, apps, or artificial intelligence. A smarter city should use engineering, technology, and better planning to improve people's lives while using resources more efficiently.
Engineers and construction professionals can contribute through:
🏢 Energy-efficient buildings that reduce energy consumption.
🚆 Better transportation that improves mobility and reduces environmental impact.
🌳 Green and resilient infrastructure designed for changing climate conditions.
💧 Smarter water and resource management.
♻️ More sustainable construction materials and practices.
This matters because buildings and construction account for around 37% of global CO₂ emissions, according to UNEP.
But technology alone does not make a city smart. UN-Habitat emphasizes a people-centered approach, where sustainability, inclusion, accessibility, resilience, and quality of life are also important.
Let’s discuss!
If you could change ONE thing in your city to make it smarter and more sustainable, what would it be?
Transportation? Buildings? Energy? Green spaces? Water management?
